New Dengue Case Reported on Oahu
DOH Confirms Travel-Related Infection
HONOLULU - The Hawaii Department of Health (DOH) has confirmed one new travel-related case of dengue virus on Oahu, bringing the total number of cases reported in the state to two this year.
Affected Individual Traveled to Infected Region
The affected individual recently traveled to a region where dengue is known to be present. DOH officials are investigating the case to determine the specific location of exposure. Symptoms of dengue typically appear within 4-10 days of being bitten by an infected mosquito and can include fever, headache, muscle and joint pain, nausea, vomiting, and rash.
DOH reminds residents and visitors to take precautions to prevent mosquito bites, including wearing long sleeves and pants, using insect repellent, and eliminating standing water around homes where mosquitoes can breed.
Avoid Travel to Affected Areas
DOH also advises against travel to areas where dengue is known to be present, especially for those who are pregnant or have weakened immune systems. Dengue can be a severe illness, and there is no specific treatment or cure. Individuals who experience symptoms after traveling to an affected area should seek medical attention immediately.
