Public Urged to Take Precautions

The Hawaii Department of Health (DOH) has confirmed a travel-related case of the dengue virus in Hana on the island of Maui. The patient, a resident of Maui, recently traveled to an area where the virus is known to be present.

Dengue virus is a mosquito-borne illness that can cause fever, headache, muscle and joint pain, and nausea. In severe cases, dengue can lead to hospitalization and even death.

The DOH is urging residents and visitors to take precautions to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes. These precautions include:

  • Wearing long sleeves and pants when outdoors
  • Using insect repellent containing DEET, picaridin, or IR3535
  • Emptying standing water around your home, where mosquitoes can breed
  • Using mosquito nets over beds

The DOH is also asking residents and visitors to be aware of the symptoms of dengue virus and to seek medical attention if they experience any of these symptoms.
