Nitra Nehoda Dozens killed in Hungary bus-train collision
At least 70 people have been injured, six of them seriously
A bus carrying Hungarian schoolchildren and adults collided with a train Tuesday in eastern Hungary near the town of Nyirabrony, killing at least 18 people and injuring 70 others, six of them seriously, police said.
The accident occurred at a level crossing where the bus was hit by a train traveling from Budapest to Nyiregyhaza, police said.
The bus, which was carrying 42 Hungarian schoolchildren and six adults, was reportedly on its way to a school trip in Budapest.
A rescue operation involving 10 ambulances and more than 30 firefighters was underway, and the injured were being taken to local hospitals.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade confirmed that there were no New Zealanders among the victims.
The cause of the accident is under investigation.
