Spencer Rattler: From Netflix QB1 to NFL Draft Day Bust
A Tale of Hype and Disappointment
Spencer Rattler, the former Oklahoma quarterback who was once considered one of the top prospects in the country, has fallen hard from grace. After a disappointing college career and a mediocre performance in the NFL preseason, Rattler is now considered a draft day bust.
The Hype
Rattler was a highly touted recruit coming out of high school. He was ranked as the No. 1 quarterback in his class and committed to Oklahoma. As a sophomore in 2020, Rattler started all 11 games for the Sooners and threw for over 3,000 yards and 28 touchdowns. He was named the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year and finished eighth in the Heisman Trophy voting.
The hype surrounding Rattler continued to grow in 2021. He was featured in a Netflix documentary called "QB1: Beyond the Lights" and was considered a potential No. 1 overall pick in the NFL Draft. However, Rattler's performance on the field did not live up to expectations. He struggled with accuracy and decision-making, and the Sooners finished the season with a disappointing 6-7 record.
The Fall
Rattler's draft stock plummeted after his poor junior season. He was selected by the New Orleans Saints in the fifth round of the 2024 NFL Draft, far below where he was expected to go. Rattler has struggled to make an impact in the NFL. He has appeared in only one preseason game and has yet to throw a pass in the regular season.
The Bust
Spencer Rattler is now considered a draft day bust. He was once one of the most highly touted quarterback prospects in the country, but his performance on the field has not lived up to expectations. Rattler is a cautionary tale about the dangers of hype and the importance of substance over style.
