Bird Flu Cases Surge among Workers in Colorado

Five Employees Test Positive, Doubling Number of US Cases

In a shocking development, five cases of bird flu have been identified among workers culling poultry at a farm in northeast Colorado. This announcement doubles the number of human cases in the United States since the virus began affecting agricultural workers. The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment reported the concerning news late on Sunday, revealing that the infected individuals had tested positive for the virus.

Massive Poultry Culling Planned

In response to the outbreak, nearly 18 million chickens will be euthanized at an egg-laying operation in Weld County. This drastic measure is necessary to contain the spread of the virus. The Weld County outbreak marks the first such incident at a commercial facility in Colorado since February and the second since December 2022.

A Resurgence of Bird Flu

The recent cases highlight a resurgence of bird flu, a highly contagious virus that has been causing significant losses in the poultry industry. The virus can spread quickly through close contact with infected birds or their secretions, posing a risk to workers in poultry facilities and potentially even to the public.
